Avant Pharmacy & Wellness Center can now provide patients an oral antiviral pill therapy for the treatment of COVID-19 in patients who are experiencing mild to moderate symptoms. While the FDA has granted Emergency Use Authorization of this medication, it is recommended for patients:
- with positive results of direct SARS-CoV-2 viral testing, and
- who are at high risk for progressing to severe COVID-19 including hospitalization or death, and for whom other COVID-19 treatment options authorized by the FDA are not accessible or clinically appropriate
This is not for pre or post exposure. Treatment should be initiated within 5 days of symptom onset.
Not recommended for use during pregnancy. Assess whether patients with child-bearing are pregnant before initiation of therapy.
- Females: Reliable form of birth control should be used during treatment AND four days after final dose
- Males: Should use reliable form of contraception during treatment AND three months after final dose
Patient will be pre-screened to determine eligibility. Below are a list of conditions that may put patients at “HIGH-RISK” for progressing to severe COVID-19:
- Aged ≥ 60 years
- Being overweight (BMI 25+)
- Smokers (Current, Former)
- Diabetes
- High Blood Pressure
- Cardiovascular disease (including congenital heart disease)
- Chronic lung diseases (e.g., asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, interstitial lung disease, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension)
- Vitamin D deficiency
- An immunocompromising condition or immunosuppressive treatment
- Chronic kidney disease
- Sickle cell disease
- Neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g., cerebral palsy) or other conditions that confer medical complexity (e.g., genetic or metabolic syndromes and severe congenital anomalies)
- Medical-related technological dependence (e.g., tracheostomy, gastrostomy, or positive pressure ventilation that is not related to COVID-19)
- Mental Health Conditions (Depression, Schizophrenia)
- History of Substance abuse (alcohol, drugs)
- History of Stroke
