Pharmacogenetic Testing

Genetic Testing Can Help Identify Your Risk for Medication Side Effects or Non-Response to Medications

Pharmacogenetic Testing analyzes how your genes guide the metabolism of prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications.

Pharmacogenetics is the study of an individual’s genetic variations in the body that are associated with an individual’s ability to metabolize prescription or over-the-counter drugs. pharmacogenetics was a natural outgrowth of human genome sequencing back in 2001. Medical research shows that individuals react differently to medications, due to their unique DNA. Pharmacogenetics, also referred to as “PGx” examines how a patient metabolizes specific drugs as encoded by their DNA. PGx testing reveals variations in drug metabolism genes that either encode less efficiently (defined as “poor metabolizers”) or more efficiently in terms of metabolic enzyme activity (defined as “rapid metabolizers”).

Identifying how a patient metabolizes a medication allows for prescribers to design a personalized treatment plan with medications that work best and are safest for that patient. In addition to reducing adverse drug reactions, PGx testing also increases patient confidence and medication adherence, decreases medical costs, and outlines optimal dosage of medications for that patient.

The Rxight® Pharmacogenetic Test is Available at Our Pharmacy

Rxight® was developed by MD Labs, a leading CLIA certified laboratory that specializes in pharmacogenetic testing. Rxight® is a pharmacogenetic testing program that is accurate, prompt, reliable, and easy to understand for pharmacists, prescribers and patients. MD Labs utilizes advanced technology to test for 60 alleles on 21 genes to see how a patient metabolizes over 200 medications.

The Rxight® pharmacogenetic test guides healthcare providers to take a course of action to help prevent severe drug side effects and allows for a more tailored drug treatment plan for patients

Rxight® was designed to be a key component for precision medicine. Precision medicine allows your healthcare provider and your pharmacist to work together to create a medication treatment plan that minimizes harmful drug reactions and helps the patient get on the right medications sooner.

With Rxight®, prescribers are able to understand how a patient’s genes affect the medications they prescribe. This allows the prescriber to make a more informed prescribing decision, rather than finding the right medication with the traditional trial-and-error approach, which can be frustrating, costly and dangerous.

The Rxight® pharmacogenetics test, which requires a simple cheek swab at our pharmacy, is designed to examine how your DNA guides the metabolism of over 200 clinically relevant prescription and over-the-counter medications (see list below). Some of these medications are commonly prescribed for diseases such as ADHD, diabetes, depression, or cancer.

Personalized Medication Review®

Your Rxight® report results will be reviewed with you in detail by a pharmacist trained in pharmacogenetics. With this information, you, your prescriber and your pharmacist can work together to create a treatment plan that is best for you, based on your specific genetic profile. Your results hold true for life because your genes do not change.

Knowing how you metabolize and respond to certain medications can help you avoid serious medication side effects before you begin treatment. Your results serve as your Medication Blueprint ™ based on your unique genetic makeup that shows you which medications might be harmful for you and which should work as intended. In this way, Rxight® gives you a good starting point from which to work and can help guide medication therapy in the present and future.

Over 200 Commonly Prescribed Medications Spanning 50+ Therapeutic Drug Classes are Analyzed

The following is a list of medications tested in the Rxight® panel across dozens of pharmacological classes. Click on a medication name to view a comprehensive article on the side effects from the drug or drug class. The articles were written by experts with degrees in medicine and genetics to ensure clinical integrity. We invite you to share this information with a pharmacist or your prescriber.
